(Book Review) Procrastination Proof: Jon Acuff Had Me Until The Personal Attack.

You almost lost me on page 219, Jon. Technically I think I have to blame your wife and her bullying.

There I was, vibing with everything you had written. Then, out of nowhere, shots fired. The exact phrase, insultingly throw-outable, was “best paired with easy-fit slip in Skechers.”

Whoa whoa whoa. Pump the brakes, Acuff. You can say you weren’t stylish without attacking my favorite purchase over the last year. The jeans were the villain, no need for my shoes to get caught in the crossfire.

My size 12 extra wide Skechers are the best shoe I’ve ever owned. They are comfortable, stylish-enough, and most importantly a key piece of my recovery from foot surgery last year.

So I’m going to let it slide. After all, your previous books and expert wisdom are the main reason I even got in shape enough to lose the weight and make me falsely believe I could just become a sprinter.

Turns out the main takeaway from that above-linked tale is that with a little effort, anyone can hit their out-of-pocket maximum for a high deductible health plan in any given year.

You’d better be glad that I owe a lot of my personal growth and success in parenting, vocation, and just life in general directly to insights I’ve gained in reading and re-reading your books over the years.

Because taking shots at my Skechers is a bridge too far.

(Buy all of Jon’s books and thank me later)

The other night at the Derek Webb concert I had a blast. Very few artists can make me think like he can. His perspective on life is amazing. I think my favorite song on his new album (which he plays ALL of at the show) is “The Spirit and the Kick Drum.” It is a…

Last night I had a solo music gig at a local assisted living community, where they had me come play some background music for a party focused around some of the medical professionals and home-health providers that work alongside the facility. I’ve played a gig at the community before, but last time it was for…

  • Thanks, Matt.

Nine years, five months, and 9ish days ago, I got an email well before I woke up, that Melanie Cromwell (who I had never met) went into labor with her 4th child. She and baby were doing fine. This was the most unconventional HR onboarding process I’d ever been a part of. The years that…

  • The Struggle

It’s funny how my little man struggles to stay awake. I am sitting beside his crib, standing periodically to shh-shh him, and thinking about how funny we humans are. We go to great lengths to prove how self-sufficient we are. Benjamin refusing to go to sleep has nothing on my refusal to submit to God…

  • The Onesie Trials

As we packed up to leave the hospital, we had to put little Ben into his “going home outfit” (of which we brought 15, I think, in case he was either 4 pounds 2 ounces or 12 pounds 13 ounces… can’t ever be too prepared).  We decided to go with the definitely-too-large outfit seen above,…

  • Carolina Blue blood

It’s a metaphor, don’t panic. His blood is normal colored, but hard to get to, it turns out. The pictures below were taken during the first attempt to draw blood. We didn’t get enough, so now we are waiting while they find a nurse who can draw blood from his ankles. I think it’s because…
