Happy Birthday to Me!
I turn 46 today.
I’ve spent more of my life as a college grad (and ostensibly an adult by any measure other than ability to rent a car in the US) than as a student.
I’ve lived 3X the amount of time needed to mature enough to be offered a learners permit for driving in both my home state as well as the one I live in now.
If I had invested $100 in the S&P 500 index on my birthday and not touched it, it would be worth around $18,800.00 today, without a single other investment.
I’ve been alive long enough for my heart to have beaten (conservatively) around 3 billion times.
An Apple tree planted on the day I was born could have (conservatively) produced 20,000 apples by now.
A coffee tree planted the day I was born could have (conservatively) contributed to 2,000 cups of coffee.
I’ve lived through three distinct careers, first in vocational ministry, then in software/technology, and now Education.
Over my lifetime, I’ve cut or shaved approximately 20 feet of hair from my head (not, of course counting by individual hairs, in which case you’re looking at more than 500 miles of hair). I did around 2 of those feet on two individual days, and there’s a local news story to prove one of those occurences.
Similarly, but more disturbing, I’ve trimmed around 54 feet of fingernails over same period.
I don’t have some pithy note about what it all means, but year 45 was among the best years yet. Here’s to more fingernails, hair, and maturity!
